The wind must have dispersed some of the seeds from this dandelion. Where did those seeds land? Will they grow into bright yellow flowers, providing a splash of color and hope as we finally experience some colder weather in Austin?
Dandelions are considered weeds. They have edible parts and are also used medicinally, in teas and tinctures. I think of the proverbial saying “bloom where you’re planted”. However cliche this may seem, it resonates with me. Many think this is found in the Bible; it is not found in the Bible, however, and is instead attributed to priest, writer, and saint in the Catholic Church, Francis de Sales who lived in the early 1600s. Still, the meaning serves as a reminder that there are many situations and circumstances beyond my control. Hopefully, I can stay present and flourish right where I am. I can’t do that alone and I am thankful for those in my life who help me bloom.
Like most sayings, I would never tell someone to “bloom where they’re planted” when they’re facing a challenge. I would hope to be able to be like a stake for them, holding them strong as they begin sprouting. Sometimes we can change certain situations and perspectives; may we have discernment and courage to do so in those times. And in the rest of times, may we focus our energy on becoming rooted and surviving or thriving, right where we are. May we be open to wonder and possibility.
Researchers have been studying dandelions, learning that their very plant structure responds to humidity and wind conditions, allowing for seed dispersal (or not). Considered dandelion “thinking”, it appears that the dandelion responds to its environment for survival and growth. When the dandelion feels the conditions are right, the seeds will be dispersed.
I hope I can have that kind of surrender and response. May I be like a dandelion.
Reflection:
Where and when do I try to control situtations, the world in which I live, or people around me? In what areas of my life can I practice a little more active work and active surrender?
Prayer:
“May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a child of God.
Let this presence settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.” ~ Prayer of Trust, often attributed to St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
